The first roulette table stood in Paris. No wonder
that all of the important terms in the game, from
“Faites vos jeux!” to “Rien ne
va plus”, were originally in French.
The Object of the Game
You win by betting on the number or group of numbers
on which the ball will fall in the wheel.
The Gaming
Table
Roulette is played on a table. The roulette
wheel and the actual playing field, the tableau,
are located on the table. The wheel contains
37 small slots with the numbers 0 to 36 in
irregular order.
The colour of the slots alternates between
red and black, only the zero is green. The
number fields of the tableau are arranged
in consecutive order. All other betting
fields are located on the edges of the tableau.

How the Game is Played
“Faites vos jeux!” or “Place your
bets, please!” – this is how the croupier
begins the game.
You now place your jetons (minimum and maximum bets
are posted at every table) on the fields which you
think have the best chance of winning. If you ask,
the croupiers will be glad to help you place your
bets. The croupier then tosses the ball into the
wheel.
No further bets can be made after the croupier
has announced “Rien ne va plus!” or
“No more bets, please!” As soon as
the ball comes to rest in one of the slots, the
croupier calls out the winning number and points
to it on the table. For example: “28, black,
pair, passé”.

The Jetons
Jetons rather than cash are used to place
bets on the tableau. The jetons vary in
shape, colour and denomination (from €2
to €10,000). They can be purchased
either at the counter or at the gaming tables.
