Against the bank

This term is used in Roulette when the bet is placed against rows of numbers or colours that have turned up several times. So if someone plays on red after playing on black several times, then they are playing against the bank.

American Roulette (Roulette)

There are a few differences between the layout of American Roulette and French Roulette: because of the positions of the odds and evens, players at the table will find it easy to reach them. The depiction of the kettle on the table is also new, and means that “announces” (call bets) on numbers such as zero/two right/two left may be placed directly on the table. Another advantage of American Roulette is that the game is played faster.

Announce (Roulette):

The player tells the croupier what he wishes to play (numbers, Cheveaux, Carrés etc.) and hands over the appropriate chips. There are set announces that refer to sections of the wheel, such as zero play (0/3, 12/15, 26 and 32/35), Orphelins (1, 6, 9, 14, 17, 20, 31, 34), Small Series (5/8, 10/11, 13/16, 23/24, 27/30, 33/36), Large Series (22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25) and other announces such as Finals (numbers that end in the same digit; e.g. Final 3 includes the numbers 3, 13, 23, 33). Other Announces are the “First Four” (the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3), Play 7/9 (numbers 7, 8, 9, 17, 18, 19, 27, 28, 29), the verticals of a number (the top and bottom Cheval of a number), with 20 e.g. 17/20 and 20/23, and the Complet of a number where all four Chevaux and the number itself are placed. An announce is also a set that a system player works out in the course of his system.

Bet (Roulette)

Players either place their bets themselves, or they make the appropriate “announce” to the croupier to place their jetons (higher chances only). They must then ensure that the croupier carries out the announce correctly.

Black Jack

Black Jack is a card game that is commonly regarded as a variant of the internationally popular game 17 + 4. In Black Jack, the players play the bank. The player tries to total exactly 21 points with his cards or get as close as possible to this number without exceeding it.

Chip

This is a more common term for a “jeton”.
On making the announce “chip” (“A chip for the staff”), a jeton is added to the “tronc” (tips).

Croupier

The person in a casino who is responsible for the way the games are played. Another English term is “dealer”, and is used in American Roulette, Black Jack and Poker.

Dealer (Roulette)

In French Roulette, dealer is another name for the croupiers who sit at the kettle. Their job is to spin the wheel and handle the payouts.

Denomination

The different values of the chips. Most common denominations: 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 5000, 10000.

Doublette (Roulette)

This is when the same number is thrown twice in Roulette. This happens more often than people think. It is more unusual for the same number to be thrown three times in succession.

Even chances (Roulette)

The name for certain Roulette chances.

With this kind of betting, the single bet (= the amount placed) will also be paid out in the event of a win. So the guest wins twice the amount played.

Even chances are:
Rouge
Noir
Passe
Manque
Pair
Impair

Even numbers

In Roulette, the even numbers are between 2 and 36, and on the tableau are referred to as Pair (French) or Even (English)

Faites vos jeux or Faites votre jeux

”Faites vos jeux!” or “Place your bets, please!” is how the croupier invites players to start the game.
In German it would be “Bitte das Spiel zu machen”.

Gaming technician

Gaming technician is the English translation of the French word “croupier”.

Head croupier

The name of the croupier who, in French Roulette, is positioned at the bottom of the table. His task is to support the other croupiers in their work. He is responsible for paying out the even-money bets, dozens and colours, and makes your “announces” for you.

Impair

is French, and means “odd, uneven”. In Roulette, this refers to the uneven, or odd, numbers. A special field with the word “Impair” (“odd” in English) offers the chance to play all uneven numbers with a single bet. In the event of a win, the single bet will be paid.

Jeton

is the name for the round chip that is used at the tables. Every bank has its own jetons in different colours and values.  Casino staff are happy to accept a jeton as a tip or in payment – e.g. at the bar – in lieu of cash.

Marked jetons

Value chips with special markings. They are handed out to special guests at French Roulette.

Maximum bet

is the maximum bet that will be accepted at a table. In Roulette it refers to the evens chance.

Minimum bet

Is the minimum amount that can be played at a table.

Mystery Jackpot

The name of a jackpot that occurs on a random gaming machine without requiring a specific winning combination.

Nichts geht mehr

In Germany, the croupier uses the words “No more bets” to inform players that from this moment on, no more bets may be placed until the next game (Coup).

Pair

The name for the 18 even numbers in French Roulette; the payment rate is 1:1.

Permanence

This is the sequence of numbers thrown in Roulette, which are recorded in writing.  This is of particular importance to system players. The numbers are usually recorded electronically, and are available to purchase in many casinos.

Permanence display
The official name for the display panel above the Roulette tables. It usually displays the last 20 numbers thrown.

Plein

Name in Roulette for the full number. The numbers go from 0 (or 00) to 36.

Quicktable (Roulette)

At this table, guests usually place their bets themselves. More Coups are thrown at Quicktable than at a “normal” table. A Quicktable is therefore ideal for system players who need long waiting times.

Rien ne va plus

“No more bets” – the sentence, translated from the French, used by the croupier in Roulette to indicate that no more jetons are to be placed on the table. No more bets are to be placed from this moment on.

Roulette

Today, French Roulette is played on a Roulette wheel with 37 little compartments (Zero and 1-36). With the exception of the green zero compartment, the colours of the compartments alternate between red and black. The game is played by the croupier dropping the ivory ball into the spinning Roulette wheel, which is started off alternately to the left and right. The ball circles a few times, then slows down and lands on one of the numbers. This is the moment of truth for every player, and everyone’s eyes follow the movements of the little ball. The croupier announces the winning number and odds at the end.

Slot Machine / Slots

English name for gaming machines.

Tableau

The official name for the area where the game is played in Roulette. It is usually on printed felt.

Tips

In the event of a win on the full number (Plein), it is common practice for a player to tip the amount of the original bet. Most of the casino employees’ earnings come from tips.

Voisins du Zero

A variant in Roulette where the numbers 0-2-3 and 25-26-28-29 are each played with two bets, and the numbers 4-7, 12-15, 18-21, 19-22 and 32-35 with one each.
A total of 9 bets are possible.

Wheel

The name of the heart of the Roulette table: the wheel, which contains 37 fields and into which the white ivory ball is thrown. The table is usually made of an exotic wood and precision-measured to a thousandth of a millimetre.
Small series

Combination game that covers a certain sector in the cylinder and comprises 12 numbers (27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33). Six units are required for this game.

Zero

Zero (0) is the 37th number in Roulette. When calculating the pay-outs, they are based on 36 Roulette numbers which means that zero also counts as a bank number. Basically, though, it is a number just like the other 36, can be used for bets in the same way and has the same payment quotes.
What is special about this is the handling of even chances (Red or Black, Pair or Impair, Manque or Passe):
whereas the numbers for 1 to 36 are assigned to the evens (one colour; even or uneven; Manque or Passe), this is not the case with zero. It is green; neither even nor odd, nor Manque or Passe.
If you have placed an evens bet and the zero lands on the kettle, your bet will not win on any of the evens chances. Your chips will be blocked, and will have half their original value.

Zero game

A variant in Roulette where the 26 and the combinations 0-3, 12-15 and 32-35 are covered on one bet. A total of 4 bets are required.
